Not Just Bar Charts: Making Better Graphs!
Not sure about you, but my students (regardless of their age) LOVE bar charts. But there is SO much more to graphing than bar charts…and so many instances in which a bar chart isn’t the best choice ;) In this 3-part series we:
-
Review how to make common graph types (that’s right, the nuts & bolts of it all),
-
Unpack when to use different kinds of graphs (aka what to use when),
-
Explore best practices for making persuasive, but not manipulative, data graphics, and
-
Identify how to elevate our storytelling with data (e.g., make them work and look great)!
Looking for ways to grow your skills, realize you are not alone, and learn some easy tips, tricks, and strategies to start implementing today to make your graphs better?
WHO IS IT FOR?
Anyone interested in building out their data visualization skills! Examples will be grounded in what is relevant for teaching data skills in grades K-12 in the United States, but the resources, tips, tricks, and strategies can be applied in any setting.
WHAT IS IT?
It’s a crash course (via three asynchronous mini-courses) in tips, tricks, and strategies for elevating your work with data and graphs to the next level. We can’t, nor probably want to, all be professional level data visualizers…but we certainly can all make rocking graphics when we are working with data that are FAR better than the defaults. We will explore introductory concepts, participate in hands-on share activities, discuss hurdles and next steps, and grow together in our learning. The three sessions are:
-
Graph Types - What are They & How Can I Make Them? We explore common graph types, when to use each of them, and how to make them in common graphing programs (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets).
-
Leverage Data & Graph Best Practices to Your Advantage We explore the difference between persuasive and manipulative graphs, as well as best practices that we can all easily apply to our data visualizations and common pitfalls to avoid.
-
Embrace & Enhance Your Inner Data Storyteller We explore how and why we should approach data visualization from a storytelling perspective, and how we can start to integrate that into our personal work with data.
Complete one, two, or all three mini-courses in the series.
-
Each mini-course is $47.
-
Each mini-course includes 2.5 hours of content plus additional links for more resources.
-
If you would like to receive a certificate of 3 Professional Development hours per mini-course you may submit the suggested assignment for feedback.
-
You will have access to the mini-course and all content for 90 days.
WHEN IS IT?
Mini-courses will be launched throughout 2022: (Sign up here to receive the launch announcements)
