Data-based Lessons, Free Datasets

By Kristin Hunter-Thomson

Have you heard of Number Talks? YouCubed has now created something similar for data!

They are bite sized opportunities to work with real-world data in ways that are student-friendly and focused on supporting students to build their skills all while being anchored to a research-based pedagogical routine. Students are shown the visualization, given some time to process it, and discuss what they notice.

Let’s check it out!

Data Talks is working to provide opportunities for students to practice considering and interpreting a variety of data and data visualizations in ways that emphasize exploratory data analysis and without high stakes for students to “get it right”.

What is extra exciting is that while they provide data visualizations (tagged to grade level) to use, the structured approach that Data Talks provides can be used with ANY data visualization that you want to use. This provides a great way to integrate the process into areas that are interesting to you and your students…or already in your curriculum :)

Here is an example of one of the provided Data Talks on Hand Washing

The Data Talks build from the same approach to the New York Times: What’s Going on in this Graph? (review here).

Check out the Data Talks and let us (and the project team) how it goes!
